Victim Compensation
A criminal trial concerns punishment of the defendant, rather than attempting to compensate the victim. However, some states administer a fund that provides monies to victims of violent crime. In New York, for example, victims and their dependents are eligible for an award of money upon proper and timely filing of a claim. A defendant, his accomplices, family or dependants are never eligible for victim compensation funds.
