Progressive Discipline Policy (ID)
A progressive discipline policy is a structured, step-by-step process to address employee behavior and performance issues. Typically it begins with less serious disciplinary measures like verbal warnings and escalates to more serious measures, such as written warnings, suspension, and possible termination if the issues continue. Employers may find it beneficial to have a written policy that outlines the steps in the progressive discipline process but also reserves the right to skip steps in certain circumstances.
This policy can be customized for company-specific practices, including the documentation and appeals process.
The policy will need to be reviewed in conjunction with your employee handbook, other existing company policies, and any applicable state laws to ensure alignment. It should be signed by all employees. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the Workplace Investigation Report, Written Warning, Final Disciplinary Notice, and Termination Notice. This policy is not intended for employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement, or for Montana employers due to the specific termination requirements under the Wrongful Discharge From Employment Act (WDFEA).
